Stef-Albert Bothma

After graduating from Wits in 1990, Stef-Albert Bothma received a Doctorate in Piano summa cum laude from the University of Washington in 1995 where he studied with Bela Siki.  A recipient and winner of numerous prominent awards and scholarships, his vast repertoire includes the complete sonatas and concerti by Beethoven, and the entire piano ouvre by Debussy. Critics have hailed his playing as “mesmerizing and magical with a virtuosic command that appears effortless and natural” (London Times) and “a rare talent of superior artistry and facility” (Chicago Tribune) and “passionate, powerful and brilliant” (New York Times). Stef-Albert served on the faculties of the Seattle Conservatory and University of Washington between 1995-2000 while performing and recording extensively. In 2000 his passion and interest in the fine arts changed the course of his professional career by extended studies in the genres of architecture, design and visual arts.  He founded Stef-Albert Studios which has since grown to an international award winning design firm. With offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, his prominent presence in the design industry counts large projects in the Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Moscow, Kuwait, Beirut, London, Paris, and throughout the United States.

As a visual artist, Dr. Bothma has received a solid reputation with works in major private and corporate collections.  His sold out exhibits in the USA, Canada and Europe have distinguished him as a revolutionary in the art world.

During 2000-2007 Stef-Albert abandoned the piano completely in the light of his passionate involvement in the design and visual arts genres. Since his residency in New York city, he became active at the Julliard School of Music, it was just a matter of time before his playing caught the attention of the public and press.

On January 2010 Stef-Albert will make his Carnegie Hall Debut in January in a concert titled “Music on Canvas 57 x 7” during which 35 of his art works will be projected on the stage during the performance. Making history as the first pianist to be featured at Carnegie Hall in this way, Stef-Albert is hailed as the ultimate Renaissance Man of the 21st Century by Vanity Fair.  Later in the season, Dr. Bothma will return to the stage again with additional concerts in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago.

The 2010 Season will also feature his debut as set designer for the Greenwich Opera.

Stef-Albert divides his personal time between homes in New York, Connecticut and USA and Provence. France.
