Dewald von Solms

DEWALD a natural born singer and entertainer has been a successful opera-singer in GAUTENG for the past 9 years. A real people’s person who lives his passion for music. He is on the Executive Committee of the acclaimed opera-group The Black Tie Ensemble and senior tenor for this well known group initiated by Neels Hansen and Mimi Coertse. He began his studies in Bloemfontein and continued with master classes under Francis Kipping, Werner Nel, Hans Van Heerden, Surita Stern, Mimi Coertse and vocal coach, Eric Muller.

Dewald has performed most of the tenor lead roles as lyric-Italian tenor. He started his career as “The Prince” in Romberg’s The Student Prince and followed it up with “The Duke” in Verdi’s Rigoletto, “Lt. Pinkerton” in Madama Butterfly, “Rudulfo” in La Boheme, “Alfredo” in La Traviata, “Edgardo” in Lucia di Lammermoor, “Turriddo” in Cavaleria Rusticana and in 2007 “Don Jose” in Carmen. Other roles include; Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Borsa in Rigoletto, Gaston in La Traviata, Duncan in Princess Magogo and many more.

His favourite role is that of Rudolfo and his favourite production was Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor. Although opera is the most extravagant and demanding art form combining all the classical genres in one production, being an Opera-singer in South Africa is a real challenge and surviving the financial and personal difficulties in this art form has opened the doors to a greater audience with corporate and private concerts. Dewald has performed at corporate functions all over the country and Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Nigeria, Japan and Europe for most of the major South African companies and Government Organizations.

He has performed at most of the Art Festivals across the country, KKNK, Aardklop, Volksblad, Macufe, Whiteriver, Dolphine Coast. Highlights in his career include, meeting Nelson Mandela, singing in Graz for a + 2500 Austrian audience with a standing ovation and representing South Africa at the International Cultural Festival in Japan.

In December 2006 Dewald launched his debute album “My Inspiration” in grand style with 9 musicians, 2 senior dancers of the SABT and a 60 piece choir for a 750 strong audience at the Aula Theatre in Pretoria. The CD is a reflection of his career and a tribute to those who inspired him to follow a singing career. It contains hits of today and yesteryear like Vivo per lei, Caruso, You raise me up, Perhaps Love, Love changes everything, Unforgettable, My Way, The Prayer, The Lord’s Prayer (with Mimi Coertse), I’ll walk with God. After only 5 weeks on Classic FM’s Top 20 it has reached the number 7 spot. Bowline Music has the rights to distribute Dewald’s debute cd to all the national outlets and should be available from July 2007.

South Africa’s Top Tenor Tour is a brainchild of this innovative artist. His passion for people and the arts drove him to set off and join forces with some of SA’s top tenors from different cultures, backgrounds and genres, to convince audiences that SA has it’s own international stars. All they need is the financial backing and corporate confidence to excel and become one of the world’s top vocal combinations.

"Diva E Divo” -  Is a Corporate joint venture with soprano Ilse Mazzone.
